NARS Foundation is excited to present The Thing in Itself, an exhibition featuring the works of our Season IV, 2020 Artists in Residence: Mathieu Grenier, Yi Hsuan Lai, Simone Couto, Orr Menirom, Ingrid Tremblay, Joseph Wilcox and William Chan.
The works in this exhibition touch upon the semiotics of perception. They are rooted in the idea of an appearance as the dissolution or construction of a thing –a place or a space, a memory, an object or an idea, and bring to question the ways in which we observe and absorb the world.
Perception plays an essential part in these artists' practice, and they explore it in relation to the body, to language, politics, nature, history, reality, artificial intelligence, to a medium, and to place.
Their processes seek to divide the thing itself from what it seems. Almost as if it was a matter of creating an illusion, they play with materials, scale, and repetition to create collective narratives mixed with personal and fictional elements.
The thing in itself is also an exploration of media –photography, video, sculpture, drawing, installation– seen as both tool and outcome, and as an ongoing loop that exists to question the production of meaning.
Due to COVID regulations, attendance is limited for the opening reception. Please click here to RSVP.
NARS Foundation Galleries are open to the public from 12pm - 5pm, Monday - Friday. Please contact info@narsfoundation.org with any other inquires.
