Jake Couri leverages emerging CGI technologies, building a series of virtual avatars and environments to investigate the coalescence between physical and digital realities. The fabrication of digital characters, gaming worlds, and sculptural objects bring into question the extraction of raw material, corporeality, and the industries that mine both. The sculptures are companions to the digital video, often behaving as a byproduct, totem, or red herring to support the works delivery. Presented as armatures of carrier systems, machined patterns mimicking microfluidics, and apparatuses utilized to distill minerals, each appear nearly indistinguishable from manufactured objects.
Jake Couri received his MFA in Fine Arts with honors from California College of the Arts in San Francisco, CA (2018). His work has been shown at Milan Machinima Festival in Milan, IT (2023), Green Kill in Kingston, NY (2023), Public Records in Brooklyn, New York (2020), and Superposition Gallery in Los Angeles, CA (2019). He completed an artist residency at Anderson Ranch in Snowmass Village, Colorado (2019). He currently lives and works in New York City.
