The New York Art Residency & Studios (NARS) Foundation is pleased to present Subtle Interchange, an exhibition featuring selections from the work of Season IV, 2015 International Artist Residency Artists: Vasiliki Antonopoulou, Keren Anavy, Emma Critchley, Milton Croissant, Bima Engels, Sandra Erbacher, Emma Bernhard, John Roach, and Karin Waskiewicz. Over the course of three to six months, NARS artists-in-residence immerse themselves in their studio practice and pursue intentional interactions with their peers. Emerging from the archetype of the solitary artist working tirelessly in their studio, these nine artists have come together in South Brooklyn to form a community, impacting their work in ways both subtle and immediate.

Entering through painting, performance, installation, video, sculpture, and sound art, their disparate practices bring forth fresh ideas. Vasiliki Antonopoulou’s performance and installation work explores our interaction with and experience of space and investigates the dilemma of performance documentation itself. Through her aquatic immersive practice, Emma Critchley challenges the viewer to alter their perspective of the relationship between their body and the world around them. By utilizing institutional objects which no longer conform to their original purpose, Sandra Erbacher deconstructs the institutional operative itself, and using open source, 3D modeling software, Milton Croissant aims to critically deconstruct the world around him. Through painting, Bima Engels and Karin Waskiewicz reach very different ends: Engels investigates human stories and violence in abstract form and Waskiewicz unearths the landscape through a multitude of layers of paint. Keren Anavy’s paintings and installations combine charged imagery which consequently lose their loaded context, transforming into a purely visual, abstracted experience. Emma Bernhard explores patterns of hierarchy through her collection of abandoned and forgotten objects which she then elevates the value of through transporting them to a new space. Engaging in a multi-disciplinary practice focusing on drawing and sound art, John Roach playfully investigates human perception and imagination. Together, their work tells a story of a moment in time with a subtle interchange of ideas.
