Jiyoung Song'swork investigates the dynamic interplay between space, body, and perception, focusing on how objects and spaces shift in response to movement. Through the concept of the portal, a constantly changing dimension that intertwines time, space, absence, and presence, it explores the fluidity of space as responsive rather than fixed. The portal serves as a shifting gateway, adapting to bodily movements and spatial changes. It invites engagement both physically and metaphorically, encouraging navigation through dualities such as up and down or in and out. This interplay blurs boundaries, highlighting the ambiguity of beginnings and endings. By challenging distinctions between reality and imagination, the work prompts deeper exploration of the self and its relationship with the surrounding environment.
Jiyoung (b. Seoul, Korea) explores the portal as a fluid, ever-changing dimension and direction that responds to movement, blurs boundaries, and plays between in and out, up and down. She holds a BFA from Seoul National University (Korea) and an MFA from CalArts. Jiyoung currently lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.
