Season II, 2025

Hu’s practice is an entangled embodiment of the mundane, architectural space, memory, and translation through a transcultural feminist lens. She approaches painting as an act of transcription—distilling and responding to the poetic residues of daily life. Through gestures and found marks, she engages with the ephemerality of the surroundings, capturing fleeting encounters that shape personal and collective histories. She focuses on domesticity as a feminine arena (as opposed to patriarchal configurations), a place of care, inner contemplation, and personal (be)longings. Oscillating between premeditation and improvisation, she composes and deconstructs the space and objects around her, to depict the nuanced visual poetics from the residues of the everyday.

Brubey Hu is an artist and educator based in Toronto, Canada. She holds an MFA from the University of Waterloo and a BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art, and is currently pursuing an MA in Gender and Feminist Studies at York University. Hu’s work has been exhibited at Art Mur in Montreal; Zalucky Contemporary, Art Museum at University of Toronto, Cambridge Galleries, University of Waterloo Art Gallery, and Art Gallery of Mississauga, all in Ontario. She has participated in numerous artist residencies, including the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity, the School of Visual Arts, and the NARS Foundation. She is a co-director at Tangent Collective. Her practice is supported by Ontario Arts Council and Canada Arts Council.
