La Magia de Mascaras / The Magic of Masks
Free Family Workshop

Please join us for the next session in a series of free workshops led by teaching artist Jas Pinturas. La Magia de Mascaras is a workshop that invites participants to delve into the global cultural tapestry of masks. Inspired by the vibrant masks of contemporary migrant communities in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, each session unfolds with the exploration of diverse masks, unraveling their cultural traditions, music, and representations. The heart of the workshop lies in the hands-on experience, as participants create masks that reflect the richness of their communities, cultures, and imaginative expressions. Join us in this unique journey of cultural discovery and artistic exploration, where the Magic of Masks becomes a bridge between heritage, community, expression, and personal identity.
The third workshop will begin with a small icebreaker discussion about participants' understanding of masks and their functions. Jas will then present images of masks from Guatemala. The mask highlighted during this session will be the Danza de Toritos mask, used yearlong for Various Festivities. Following the discussion and a brief historical overview of this cultural tradition, participants will create their masks using the available materials. Traditional music will play in the background to inspire and enhance creativity. The third workshop will conclude with a brief sharing session where participants can discuss their creations. At the end of the session, we will invite participants to join the next workshop to explore a new region, cultural mask, and tradition.
Following sessions will take place on May 18th and June 8th, 2024. This workshop is free to attend, and all materials are provided. Children participating should be at least 4 y/o.

Únanse a nosotros en la primera sesión de una serie de talleres gratuitos dirigidos por la artista Jas Pinturas. "La Magia de Máscaras" es un taller que invita a los participantes a explorar el tapiz cultural global de las máscaras. Inspirado en las vibrantes máscaras de las comunidades migrantes contemporáneas de Sunset Park, Brooklyn, cada sesión se desarrolla con la exploración de diversas máscaras, desentrañando sus tradiciones culturales, música y representaciones.
El tercer taller comenzará con una pequeña conversación para romper el hielo sobre lo que los participantes entienden de máscaras y sus funciones. Despues, Jas presentará imágenes de máscaras de Guatemala. La máscara destacada durante esta sesión será la de la Danza de Toritos, utilizada durante todo el año en diversas festividades. Tras la conversación y una breve reseña histórica de esta tradición cultural, los participantes crearán sus propias máscaras utilizando los materiales disponibles. El tercer taller concluirá con una breve puesta en común en la que los participantes podrán comentar sus creaciones. Al final de la sesión, invitaremos a los participantes a unirse al próximo taller para explorar una nueva región, máscara cultural y tradición.
Las siguientes sesiones tendrán lugar los días 18 de mayo y 8 de junio de 2024. La asistencia a este taller es gratuita y se proporcionan todos los materiales. Los niños participantes deben tener al menos 4 años.
