2023 Season III

Zoya Manan (Pakistan)

Artist Statement/ Biography

Zoya Manan’s practice allows her to identify her enthusiasm for creating narratives for different versions of herself. She sees herself, her experiences and her emotions in the people she encounters. Merging other’s lives and eccentricities with her own is an intuitive way for her to create new stories. She considers all of her work to be self-portraits, even though many of the depictions do not bear a physical resemblance to her. Painting aided Manan in channelizing the experiences and emotions has had in dealing with Cerebral Palsy in a productive way. She prefers working with acrylics on canvas as it is a quick drying medium, leaving room for her to experiment and fix mistakes easily. It has assisted her in expressing her emotions more fearlessly.
