2021 Studio Relief Program
Artist Statement/ Biography
Xun Wang creates visually refined sculptures, installations, drawings, working from repurposed natural, industrial, and mass-produced objects (bubble wraps, plastic, and cement, to name only a few). In her work, questions of form and the nature of sculpture are of equal importance to more environmental, social, and economic concerns regarding the circulation of commodities (artworks included) and information within a global market. Her work is a response to the material and the situation that comes to daily life. By placing industrial and commercial objects in a gallery space, she removes them from their intended function, making the audience consider what they would normally do.--
Xun Wang was born in China in 1990. She received her BA from the Art College of Xiamen University in 2013, and MFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2018. She is looking to create works that resonate and blend content, form, materials, and environment. Now she works with a broad range of media, including installation, sculpture, drawing, and painting. Wang has exhibited in the US and abroad including shows at 440 gallery, and was selected for the Juror’s Choice Award. Xun Wang lives and works in New York City.
