Artist Statement/ Biography

Tianyi Sun explores the re-creation of embodied experience and its inevitable failure. Through interweaving painting, sculpture, time-based mediums, poetry, and software, she composes responsive environments to excavate the affects of technology, and examine digital interfaces, communication systems, and archival structures as concurrent networks of power. Within which, she locates subjectivity, memory, and the body as ongoing processes that are oppressed and consoled. Moving against static, hegemonic ideals of cohesion and linearity, Tianyi’s practice is a co-creation with the audience and context in which it resides. Merging digital and physical spaces to invoke soft, intimate moments of incoherence and stumbling while constructing a parameter of questions: What are the boundaries between data, narrative, document, and experience within programmed systems and networked ecologies? How does the body perform, leak, and deteriorate while oscillating between public and private, reality and simulation, precariousness and preservation?
