2024 Season III
Artist Statement/ Biography
Shohei Katayama's art explores the connection between nature, technology, and the scientific forces shaping human experiences and interactions. His interests in physics, sustainability, and sociology are reflected in his line drawings, sculpture, and installation art. Using his art as a catalyst for environmental conversations, Katayama examines the underlying patterns of nature, showcasing unseen ecological relationships. He aims to create experiences that shift our perception of the world and ourselves through various sensory inputs, rekindling curiosity and empathy. In a time of political and ecological precarity, he creates spaces for ritual and reflection, seeking moments of solidarity and human/non-human kinship to express humanity’s interconnectedness with the natural world, each other, and the self.--
Shohei Katayama received his MFA from Carnegie Mellon University in 2019. He is the inaugural recipient of the MTV: REDEFINE award and has received the Outstanding Achievement in Contemporary Sculpture Award by the International Sculpture Center, among others. His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally at venues such as Palazzo Mora in Venice, Plaxall Gallery in New York, and Littman Gallery in Portland. Katayama has participated in several residencies, including the Facebook Artist-in-Residence Program, the Arctic Circle Residency in Svalbard, the Labverde Amazon Residency in Brazil, the International Sculpture Center Residency in New Jersey, the Tough Art Residency Program in Pittsburgh, and the Asia Institute Crane House in Louisville.
