2023 Season III

Artist Statement/ Biography

Through material experimentation and collecting, Cubberley’s work considers the fragility of systems that can feel inevitable. She uses low tech technologies like paper mache, knitting, and stop motion, intertwined with 3D modeling and animation to make installations, videos, and sculptural scenarios. She collects iconic grocery packaging (bread tags, berry baskets and egg cartons), construction site debris, seed pods, and geological bits that all come to her through systems of production and distribution. She picks apart these item’s historical, material, and emotional relations in order to investigate how seemingly banal products of our material culture can be used to exfoliate the social “naturalness” they are granted.
