2024 Season III
Artist Statement/ Biography
Jeehee Yoo intertwines traditional Korean paper with recycled materials to explore the interplay of time, space, absence, and presence. By repurposing discarded remnants into new forms, she metaphorically addresses the flow of time and the surrounding voids. Inspired by negative space in East Asian art, she contemplates emptiness and absence, conveying ambiguity, evoking a sense of dreamlike melancholy, and grasping at the edges of vaguely remembered sensations. Her work reflects subtle nuances and everyday experiences that shape cultural identity, significant only in their absence. Employing techniques like crafting paper pulp, clay, sewing, and weaving, she redefines our perception of the past, present, and future, bridging the gap between tangible reality and intangible emptiness.--
