CHiKA (Japan/USA)
Artist Statement/ Biography
CHiKA's installation always revolves around the Japanese homophone that has a unique combination of meanings that are pronounced the same as another word but differs in purpose in Chinese characters as a concept. It expands her ideas, revealing the hidden meanings that she uses to constrain rules of structure and conceptualize her installation. The style of the installations is deeply inspired by minimalistic, simple geometric beauty, Japanese philosophy, Zen, and experimental sound. Her work looks simple at a glance, but it contains complicated mechanisms and technology that interact with the public. Her desire for the public is to have new visual experiences infuse with time and space. CHiKA found the process of finding a solution for making a complicated installation making it simple and very exciting. And she is always looking for a new way to interact with the public and create visual content.--
CHIKA is a Japanese born New York-based artist who works in light sculptures, audiovisual performances, and technology. Her experience working as a real-time visual artist, VJ with experimental sound composers, 8-bit musicians, and club DJs, experimenting with improvisational communication with an audience in real-time, one-way communication to public audiences highly influence her desire to connect them to her installation directory through interactive technology. Her interest in the medium changed along with technological evolution from Photography, Graphic Design, VJing, Projection-Mapping, to Light Sculpture. She received her BFA at the School of Visual Arts and her Masters from the Interactive Telecommunications Program at New York University, Tisch School of the Arts. As an educator, she is the founder of a projection mapping and LED pixel mapping workshop, Mappathon™, teaching mapping techniques and technology, from conceptualizing to finalizing the installation, and artist development through her practice.
