Statement:
My work is narrative, but open-ended. Mixing established icons, such as the Hopi Kachina or Catholic saints, with private symbols destabilizes narrative certainty. This invites communal creativity in which artist, audience, and disparate cultures interact. Viewers' interpretations run parallel to my own.
To limit fixed interpretations, I use materials and techniques that give a patina of indeterminate age and date many pieces 1979, the year of my birth. My process extends this open approach. As in jazz improvisation, I revisit a set of themes and motifs that reappear, change, and evolve.
